Propane Safety Information

Have peace of mind while enjoying the benefits of propane
Propane is known for being a safe energy source, thanks to strict safety standards from both the propane industry and the government.
It’s nontoxic, so even if there’s a leak, it won’t harm soil or water. Plus, propane tanks are built to be sturdy, with features like pressure-relief valves and thick walls. To make propane even safer, it has a strong, recognizable smell added, so leaks are easy to detect.
When used and maintained properly, propane is a reliable and safe energy option for both homes and businesses.
Essential propane safety tips
Using propane in your home can be perfectly safe when used properly. Here are some key best practices to keep in mind:
- Install propane leak detectors: While you may have carbon monoxide detectors in your home, they do not detect propane leaks. You also need propane leak detectors to alert you to gas leaks. Install them on every level of your home, including near propane appliances, according to manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure proper ventilation: Make sure your propane appliances are well ventilated to prevent the buildup of harmful gases.
- Have regular, professional maintenance: Contact Davis Oil & Propane to inspect and maintain your propane appliances and tanks routinely so that they function correctly.
- Know the smell of propane gas: Propane has a distinct smell, often described as being like rotten eggs or a skunk’s spray. This is due to added odorants. Familiarize yourself with this smell so that you can quickly recognize a leak.

What to do if you smell propane gas
We’ll start with what not to do: Don’t panic!
Staying calm and following the steps below can help keep you, your loved ones and your home safe in the rare event of a propane gas leak.
- Get everyone (including pets) out of the house immediately, extinguishing candles and cigarettes before you leave.
- On your way out, do not use things that can cause a spark, such as phones (including cell phones), light switches or vape pens.
- If you can safely get to it, shut off the propane supply valve on your home’s propane tank.
- Once you are safe distance from the house, call 911 and Davis Oil & Propane.
